Carotid Artery Disease
This condition occurs when plaques build up in the carotid arteries, causing narrowing that prevents blood from reaching the brain or causing ischemic strokes.
Diagnosis and Symptoms:
- Carotid artery disease can cause ischemic stroke (see ischemic stroke).
- Symptoms include headaches, tinnitus, and dizziness.
- Diagnosis is done through imaging such as ultrasound, MRA, CTA, and diagnostic cerebral angiography.
Treatment:
- Treatment aims to prevent ischemic stroke.
- Options include endovascular carotid artery stenting and carotid endarterectomy (surgical removal of plaques).
- Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, avoiding smoking, practicing good sleep hygiene, following a healthy diet, and regular exercise can reduce the risk of carotid artery disease and stroke.
