Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF)
AVF is an abnormal connection between arteries and veins.
Diagnosis and Symptoms:
- AVFs may rupture and cause brain bleeding (see hemorrhagic stroke).
- Symptoms include headaches and tinnitus (whooshing sounds).
- Diagnosis involves blood vessel imaging such as MRA, CTA, and diagnostic cerebral angiography.
Treatment:
- Some AVFs require treatment to prevent hemorrhagic stroke.
- Treatment options include endovascular embolization and surgical disconnection. Your physician will discuss treatment options.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining normal blood pressure, avoiding smoking, practicing good sleep hygiene, following a healthy diet, and regular exercise can reduce the risk of bleeding.
