Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)
AVMs are an abnormal tangle of blood vessels disrupting the normal connections between arteries and veins.
Diagnosis and Symptoms:
- AVMs may rupture and cause brain bleeding (see hemorrhagic stroke).
- Symptoms can include headaches and tinnitus (whooshing sounds).
- Diagnosis is done through blood vessel imaging such as MRA, CTA, and diagnostic cerebral angiography.
Treatment:
- Some AVMs require treatment to prevent hemorrhagic stroke.
- Treatment modalities include endovascular embolization (catheter-based), surgical disconnection, and radiotherapy. Your physician will discuss treatment options.
- Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining normal blood pressure, avoiding smoking, practicing good sleep hygiene, following a healthy diet, and regular exercise can reduce the risk of bleeding.
